Staying on Track Over the Holidays

The holidays bring comfort and joy but they can also bring calories in the thousands. This holiday season, here are 10 simple tips for staying healthy and on track with your nutrition goals:

  1. Don't go hungry to a holiday gathering-Make sure to have a high protein snack before the party so that when you arrive you are not famished and eating everything in sight.

  2. Stay hydrated-Did you know thirst can be mistaken for hunger? Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after a gathering.

  3. Stick to two bevs (I know, it's hard for me too ;)-Alcohol is full of empty calories and leads to bad choices. Try to make a deal with yourself to have a max of two. Make sure to drink plenty of water and non-caloric beverages along with the alcohol.

  4. 10,000 steps, no excuses-Make sure to get your steps in no matter what the day looks like.

  5. Don't skip exercise-Make a plan to stick to your exercise routine. If you are traveling over the holidays, find alternate ways to keep up your fitness regimen.

  6. Treat yourself to the special things-The holidays come but once a year. Why waste calories on say stale munchkins left in the breakroom after a holiday office party. Treat yourself to things you can only have this time of year and that are special. Bring on the egg nog.

  7. Practice mindful eating-Try to sit down and enjoy a meal vs grazing over the appetizer table. This way you can pay attention to what you are eating and recognize when your full.

  8. Portion control-Use a small plate, avoid going back for seconds and try not to take leftovers home.

  9. Have a game plan-Go into a holiday celebration with a plan. For example, 1 appetizer, 1 entree and a small dessert.

  10. Socialize away from the food area-If you saddle up right next to the charcuterie board, chances are you are going to over indulge. Grab a serving and sit in an area away from the temptation.
